The Beginning of My AI Journey: Finding the Right Guidance
The LinkedIn AI community thrives on people helping each other, and contributors like Brian Sykes have played a crucial role in shaping it. When I first ventured into AI, I was overwhelmed by the abundance of tutorials and information. Discovering Brian was like finding the engine that powered my journey with Midjourney.

His latest book, “Midjourney: Back to the Basics,” is essential for those wanting to learn Midjourney quickly. Brian pairs each concept with practical examples and visuals, creating a hands-on learning experience that feels like he’s guiding you step-by-step.
This book's depth and clarity set it apart. It covers everything from foundational skills to advanced techniques. Brian shows how to use Midjourney and explains the why behind each approach, making complex topics easy to grasp.
More than just a beginner’s guide, this book is a valuable resource for professionals seeking to reconnect with core principles. The fast-evolving AI landscape empowers creators to refine their skills and elevate their image-generation techniques. (But there's always a moment we need to go back to the founding roots)
Let’s look at the --sref parameter that many of us now use regularly. Creators often share their favorite settings, but you can take it further by creating your style using an image as a reference. To enhance this, combine it with the --stylize parameter. I experimented with different stylized values to blend the artistic style of --sref with my touch. Following Brian's guidance, I gained control over my render’s aesthetics, transforming basic prompts and random numbers into visually striking results. This approach truly elevated my work.

The images are made with a simple prompt:
1st image -
Professional studio portrait of a 20-year-old Vogue fashion model with long, wavy black hair. Solid contrasting gray studio background. Fashion Magazine editorial. Hasselblad. Cinematic lighting. --ar 2:3
2nd image - is an attempt at a naive painting of mine as a reference
3rd Image - my image as --sref https://s.mj.run/AU1EU9f3fuQ (image below used as an —sref)
4th image - I used together with --sref the parameter --stylize 750
Sykes’s book stands for good basics—
getting better with time, doesn’t it?
Funny how just one prompt can flip the script
